Good Things Happen when You Speak to Presenters

As pianist Anthony de Mare’s fabulous project, LIAISONS: Re-Imagining Sondheim from the Piano, took shape, he and producer Rachel Colbert found that having Anthony speaking passionately about the project with presenters yielded great results. Here, Mr. de Mare discusses with Eugenia Zukerman and Emily Ondracek-Peterson (founders of Noted Endeavors) how artists speaking with presenters can result in securing a concert.

ANTHONY DE MARE is one of the world’s foremost champions of contemporary music. Praised by The New York Times for his “muscularly virtuosic, remarkably uninhibited performance [and] impressive talents”, his versatility has inspired the creation of over 60 new works by some of today’s most distinguished artists, especially in the speaking-singing pianist genre, which he pioneered over 25 years ago with the premiere of Frederic Rzewski’s groundbreaking ‘De Profundis’.

He has performed Liaisons programs across the U.S., Canada and Cuba including Virginia Tech Center for the Arts, The Ravinia Festival, the Gilmore Keyboard Festival, the Virginia Arts Festival, the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Schubert Club in Minneapolis, Mondavi Center at UC Davis, Rockport Music Festival, the Cliburn Series in Fort Worth, and Music at Meyer in San Francisco.

Tips for “Meet and Greets”

As President and CEO of Washington Performing Arts, Jenny Bilfield has seen the organization thrive as one of the nation’s preeminent multi-disciplinary arts presenters, especially notable for launching and nurturing innumerable performing artists, and sustaining high-impact arts education partnerships with the DC public schools and diplomatic community. Bilfield has significantly broadened Washington Performing Arts’ profile and organizational capacity through new programmatic collaborations and alliances, an institutional re-branding, by launching the Mars Urban Arts Initiative (funded by Mars Inc. and Jacqueline Badger Mars) to fuel connections between mainstage and amateur DC artists, and in conceiving and producing the landmark, multi-partner concert, Of Thee We Sing, at Constitution Hall celebrating the 75th anniversary of Marian Anderson’s historic performance on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

As President and CEO of WPA (and in her previous stint as as Artistic and Executive Director of Stanford Live), Bilfield has seen her share of “meet and greets” and the successful outcomes that can arise from relationships that develop from these sometimes stressful and exhausting post-concert fetes. Bilfield suggests that artists ask questions and learn about those in attendance as a way of developing relationships that might prove beneficial for both parties.

Relationships Pave the Way to Financing Projects

Cellist Joshua Roman talks with Eugenia Zukerman and Emily Ondracek-Peterson of Noted Endeavors about the importance of relationships and how those relationships can open doors to realizing projects.

Josh realized the importance of relationships early in his career. Projects such as “On Grace” with Anna Deavere Smith – a work for actor and cello featuring original music composed by Roman, which premiered in February 2012 at San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral and is now performed around the country – were born from relationships.

Starting a Festival and THE ASK

Noted Endeavors founders Eugenia Zukerman and Emily Ondracek-Peterson ask Linda Chesis of the Cooperstown Summer Music Festival how she did it.

Flutist and festival artistic director Linda Chesis saw Cooperstown, NY as an ideal location for a music festival. With its picturesque lake setting, small town charm, restaurants and attractions, including the National Baseball Hall of Fame, The Farmers’ Museum, and the Fenimore Art Museum it seemed an ideal spot. Beginning with three events in 1999, Linda has since then offered the region more than 100 performances, from classical to contemporary, jazz to bluegrass, cabaret to kids’ concerts. The Festival has featured: Midori, Hank Jones, the American String Quartet, the Tokyo String Quartet, the St. Lawrence String Quartet, Tim Fain, Bill Charlap, Hilary Kole, Simone Dinnerstein, and Mark O’Connor. How did Linda Chesis do it? With a lot of work and a lot of love.
